How are herbals different from pharmaceuticals?

Pharmaceutical drugs that are widely used today, in most cases are purified single chemical substances that have been synthesized (refined or purified) in laboratory conditions. The main difference between herbal remedies and modern medicine is that herbal remedies always come in more complex biological structures, that might have hundreds (or thousands!) of various chemical elements in them, while most of the modern medicine is based on fully purified compounds that have been singled out and synthesized to the single element level.

Until 1987, most (around 85%) of all modern drugs in the market were derived from various plant species. Now, only about 15% of all pharmaceutical drugs on the global market are plant-based.
