Clean your room!
This might sound weird if you have no experience with psychedelics, but you have to know that while under influence of any type of psychedelics – you tend to be much more sensitive than you generally used to. This means even minor details, especially the unpleasant ones – can throw you off balance. That’s why most experienced psychonauts agree…
Step one is cleaning your room!
You will thank us later, but don’t just take this advice literally – let’s look at a broader picture here. It doesn’t just mean – cleaning your room. It also doesn’t just mean simply washing the dishes, putting your shoes away, and doing some light dusting (which you still should do!).
It means making everything cozy. And pleasant.
It means choosing your most comfortable shoes, it means fixing all the annoying details, it means wearing something that you love (sometimes that means washing it and ironing afterwards), it means putting enough makeup to make you comfortable, it might even mean getting a haircut or shaving before you go.
It other words, look around you and try to focus on the details – and make sure that all those details are pointing towards one simple goal… Full personal comfort.
Make sure you are already feeling good
If you have already done some research on this, you might have encountered the famous tripper keyphrase “Set and Setting”. Let’s start with the set.
In the tripping world, the term “set” usually refers your all internal factors that might make or break your trip. These factors surround everything that has something to do with your internal well being. That means you have to ask some simple questions before each and every magic trip:
- Does everything in life now is going great?
- Am I not griefing or haven’t I just broke up with my significant other?
- Am I not going true some big life changes?
- Am I not afraid to have this experience?
- Am I feeling healthy?
- Am I not depressed?
- Am I not tired, stressed, or mentally exhausted now?
You should be able to answer “yes, everything is amazing!” to all of these questions. Why? Well, because under the influence on any hallucinogen, your brain parts that never spoke to each other will start communicating. That’s why under the very intense psychedelic influence – things that don’t usually make sense starts making sense. In conditions like this, experienced psychonauts can start smelling colors, tasting music, and mixing other various concepts in weird and unique ways.
With a normal beginner dosage, you will not reach the end or even the middle of what these new mental connections can bring you – but you still will be experiencing them on a lower level.
Furthermore, psychedelics such as magic truffles, magic mushrooms, LSD, or similar amplifies your state of being. This means, if you already feel happy – you will feel happy like never before and if you are sad… well you might feel sad like you have never felt never before.
That’s why making sure that you are physically and mentally in a great state of being is one most important steps you have to take before each and every psychedelic experience.
Make sure the setting is right
Now, let’s jump to the second part of “set and setting” – the external setting. Many experienced psychonauts agree, just like your mind nasties can throw you of rails while tripping, so as your environment plays a huge role in the quality of psychedelic experience you are having.
That happens because, as we mentioned before – you become overly sensitive to everything. Meaning that if you don’t like the situation you are in, you will hate it! But don’t worry, while internal factors can be difficult or even impossible to fix on the spot, external factors are easy to change. If you know one simple rule that is…
Change the thing that is bothering you!
This means if you start to feel disturbed by people you are with, the music you are hearing, the place you are in, or anything else starts to bother you deeply while you are under influence of psychedelics – the easiest way to fix it is to just radically change it. Usually, you know clearly what is bothering you.
So if you don’t like the music, turn it off or just change the vibe. If you are inside a bar, walk outside. If you are with a group of people and you don’t like them – just leave. This might be difficult to comprehend with a clear head as we have so many social norms embedded in our society that this might feel like the wrong thing to do – but while under influence of most hallucinogens, the society norms should be the last thing on your mind!
Here is the part where the advice splits in two – before trip measures and during trip measures.
Before your trip
Before trip measures, means you have to be very careful when choosing a perfect place, time, weather conditions, people you are with, and all other external factors of the trip. The better the conditions you will set up beforehand, the better the experience you can expect. It can act in accordance with step one – cleaning your room, which when combined… This means not only making sure the room you are in is as cozy as it can be, but also the people you are planning to trip with can be trusted to the highest extent possible.
We don’t recommend taking any psychoactive substances with people you don’t know well as this might drastically backfire even on more experienced users.
During your trip
During trip measures remain the same – if you start to feel bad about something, just change it. It will help you to stay on balance with the experience you are having.
Clear your schedule
After all the groundwork is done (the room is clean, perfect conditions are chosen and you have done an honest self-evaluation) – there’s one super important detail left to do in order to make sure you will have the best experience possible.
Making sure in the next 48 hours after you plan to take any psychoactive substance is completely clear of any responsibilities. Notice, that we are talking not only about the same day when you are planning to trip, but also the whole next day. There’s a couple of reasons for this important step.
The first one is the fact that you want to make sure you are not locking yourself in any uncomfortable situations, during and even after the trip. This can make tripping is situations that can’t be left easily difficult (like a boat, train, plane, or similar) – as mentioned before, you have to make sure you are free to go and free to change any setting you might be in.
Also the next day!
Secondly, after your trip is over – even though you will most likely not be having any hangover-like symptoms, you might feel emotionally and physically exhausted. This means you can’t be sure about how well-rested you might feel the next day. This also means, that if you just want to snuggle in your bed, eat cereal and watch cartoons all the day – you should be able to do that.
Experienced psychonauts agree, under the influence on any psychedelic substance – any responsibilities can balance you out, make sure you minimize the risk of having to do you so are so not in a mood of doing. And the best way to do that – is to cancel all plans for the next 48 hours.
Pack your things
After you made time to dive into the mystical world that psychedelics will bring you, make sure you have everything you need with you. This means to wear the shoes and clothes that feel like the most comfortable choice, pack enough water, pack some light snacks (try to be smart here – you more likely will want something natural instead of some processed foods) and make sure you pack everything you might need for a good tripping experience.
Make sure you are dressed in a way where you can easily get warm or take something off if it gets hot. Also, make sure, you have all the essentials you might need – because at the most peak moments of the experience, it might be difficult to get them. It’s not that you will be completely out of this reality, it’s just that concepts like stores, money, talking to people and similar might feel so different for you at the most trippy moments of your experience.
So try to make sure you have everything you might need and we can’t stress this enough – bring enough of your best trip buddy… Water.
Set expectations
Just before you take the dose you set on taking, especially if it’s the first psychedelic experience – it’s a wise move to clearly visualize the experience you will have. Tripping experiences tend to differ each and every time – this can be mostly influenced by setting the right expectations.
And when we say expectations, we mean really determining what you are looking for in this experience. Just to giggle with your friends? Ok! Learn more about yourself? Deal! Answer any deep personal questions you have? Yes.
But it will work best it the main goal and vision of the whole experience is set before you start tripping. Meaning the more vivid picture you set in your mind of what you are planning to take from this trip, the more likely it will go exactly as you planned. You can’t go too detailed here, so make sure you stop for a moment and really think about what is that you are seeking – the universe works in a weird way and it tends to deliver exactly what you asked for. Not more, not less.
Enjoy it!
After all these steps have been taken with caution – it’s time to just give in to the experience itself. Let the psychedelic flow guide you along this journey and trust yourself to have a great time – as you will dive into this new mind space, know that your subconsciousness is taking over control, and don’t try to fight it. There is some ancient ancestor wisdom hidden within you. You just have to listen carefully!
